DRINK OF THE MONTH: BLUE ROCKSTAR

Drink of the Month: Blue Rockstar

Since there’s no more loyalty to Hip Hop, everyone is jumping on to this “Rockstar” bandwagon. That’s cool with us—either way; we still want you all to drink with us. But understand most Rockstars didn’t really drink alcohol; they did drugs. Since we in no way, shape or form promote drug use, we came up with something the closest to it.

This drink is for those who love other planets. Those who want to live on the moon or the edge of life. Drink, enjoy and don’t call us asking for Tylenol in the morning.

1 oz Hpnotiq® liqueur
1 oz Absolut® vanilla vodka
.5 oz Devil Springs vodka

1 oz Guava Rockstar

1 splash Sprite® soda

Combine the Hpnotiq liqueur and Absolut Vanilla vodka over ice in a chilled cocktail glass. Top with Sprite and serve.

Please, drink responsibly. That means you too!

Iron Mic Presents: HIPHOP HOMECOMING

HIPHOP HOMECOMING

WORDS KENJI “MOVIESTAR K”

College campuses are buzzing right now with, homecomings; probates; football season; and all the other exciting events. Celebrate the homecoming season by coming home to Hip Hop. The following songs should be a treat even on the 31st.

1) Lupe Fiasco - Dumb it Down
Talk about an impeccable flow with intelligent subject matter. The first verse is about blinded fans looking instead of listening. So instead of dumbing down his lyrics to double his dollars (I had to say it!) Lupe is going above the clouds in respect to his art. Lupe raised the bar on this track while introducing new styles that should keep the average rap fan listening. Also peep the ‘Matrix’ theme that is an undertone of this track. I really don’t want to give anymore of this song away so I will shut up for now.
Featured on: The Cool (Early 2008)

2)Kanye West- Big Brother
Praise for Hov or a declaration of war? Just playing, this track is definitely homage to one of the greatest emcees of all time. Kanye put a lot into constructing his verses on this track as evident in the line, “An idol in my eyes; God in the game; heart of the city; Rocafella chain; never be the same; never be another; number one Young Hov; also my big brother.” For the record Kanye did not produce this track; DJ Toomp killed this one behind the boards.
Featured on: Graduation (2007)

3) Louis Logic- Mean Streak
Once touted the next Eminem but not because of his skin color, Louis Logic has had a journey to find himself as an artist. Fans are not upset at the journey but Logic has gone from a witty battle rapper to an introspective emcee and now with this track I think he has found an acceptable median. His flow has always been mean and vicious but this track is rude in a good way. Best line of the song, “Oh what a joy to employ such wickedness to trick the listeners in to shaking their hips to this, little do they know that the pros flows infamous for sending all the bros at the show home womanless.” Specifically it was Logic’s skills that earned him Eminem comparisons.
Featured on: Unreleased (2008)

4) Panacea-One Shine
Panacea pronounced Pan-a-see-a is a Hip Hop duo of emcee Raw Poetic and producer K-Murdock. The group is part of the larger collective, RPM (Restoring Poetry in Music). Panacea is signed to the resurrected Rawkus Records and has slept-on producer K-Murdock crafting soulful records while Raw Poetic crafts quotable such as, “Love story for the black and the poor, make a track to the promise land for those we ignore, fu%k a settlement we thought to put a score on the board because the blaxploitation wasn’t working no more.” Underground Hip Hop is coming to the surface once again and this duo is in the spotlight right now ready to release their next album The Scenic Route.
Featured on: The Scenic Route (2007)

5) Wale-Lets Ride feat. Daniel Merriweather
“I went to school with the white boys so I could understand the plight for ‘em but I don’t mean to fit to fight for ‘em. I ran the street with street n*ggas so I could understand police victims but that don’t mean I fit to speak for ‘em.” Wale pronounced (Wa-lay) is an emerging artist from the nation’s capital, poised to become a household name the same way Lupe Fiasco has done, through engaging lyrics and alternative flows. Wale has become UK mega producer Mark Ronson’s protégé for good reason, so let this song be your introduction to DC’s own, Wale.

SWAG: American Gangster

SWAG: American Gangster

Paul Johnson Jr.

Loafers, Vest’s and DENIM? YES!

They’re back like 1960-something. As we all know retro is the future, kind of cliché right? But this is the new thing and most of all its unisex! For her, you’re sexy in cute, petite jeans and loafers but now once you add the vest—that flat stomach you’ve been crunching all summer is now shown in the winter. Low-cut skinny jeans over your Gucci Loafers and under your bra-less vest is very sexy.

For him, many have conformed to the jeans-and-blazer look over the past two years but let’s remove the sleeves for a sec’. Keep your shirt and tie buttoned to the brim; add the vest and your loafers. Let your antique denim fall eloquently over your shoes and see what you come up with. You’ll thank us later. If you still feel weird without a blazer, throw it on over the vest. You can’t lose!

Keep on the Look Out For: Wingtip Shoes and Mink Coats. Don’t say we didn’t warn you! Frank Lucas will have our heads!

Top 5 College DJs in New York City

Top 5 New York College DJ’s

College parties have been around for years. Even Dr. King himself attended a few Ice Cold jams back in his college day. It’s one thing to go to a party; it’s another to host it. To have that pressure on your shoulders of keeping the crowd rockin’, jammin’ to what’s pumping through those speakers is a hell of a task.

Hip Hop stems from two main components: The Emcee and the Disc Jockey. As our nation—Hip Hop Nation—grows, the party aspect has become more important than it has ever been. People use parties for promotion, marketing, ability showcase, etc. Promoters have made livings off key DJ’s and themes. Every theme you can think of has been thought of already: Foam parties, costume parties, grown and sexy parties, color-coordinated parties, toga parties, you name it—it’s been thrown.

History virtually repeats itself. One thing that does change, however, is the actual DJ. There are still some DJ’s that still do it however like Red Alert, DJ Mister Cee, Funk Master Flex and DJ Hollywood. Huh? Yes, I said it—DJ Hollywood! (Do your research young fella…) Now that Hip Hop is evolving, new waves of Disc Jockeys are upon us. The props’ prerequisites remain the same: “If your whack- stay off the tables.”

The equipment has been upgraded but if you don’t know the fundamentals of DJ’ing, you won’t understand its’ evolution. Hip Hop is still number one in any genre’s competitive nature. The best spinner will spin. The best player will play. Simple as that. Just like there are sucka emcees out there, there are sucka DJ’s. DJ’s aren’t just born, they’re made. Time and effort is put into spinning and scratching, keeping the crowd involved, updating your library, marketing yourself, etc. It doesn’t come over night. Hip Hop wasn’t built in a day.

The bottom line is: Can you cold rock a party?!

Here’s our top five college DJ’s in the New York area. If you’re not on this list, either drop us a line or tighten up your shit!

Judging criteria: Ratings 1 though 5.

Range of Music: We love the old school. Without it, we would be nothing. But understand artists don’t keep making music so we can still bump old shit. How updated is your library?

Music Exclusives: Mix tapes and new songs are leaked everyday. Are you a true music fiend? Do you live on allhiphop.com for the latest news and features? Can we come to your party and hear something we’ve never heard before? Were you bumping the Aunt Jackie in ’01?

Crowd Participation: Can you go through an old school segment of the party and cut the music when everybody’s favorite part of the song comes on and the whole crowd sings it acapella? Did you try it before and nobody knew it?

Crowd Motivation: Mixing and scratching is still strong in Hip Hop. Do you play one song and give a hint of your next joint and hear the crowd go “AAAAAAWWWWWWWWWW” because they’ve been waiting for it the whole night and you tease them with a bit of the hook?

Marketability: Are you everywhere? Are you booked for the next six months? Gigs for at least every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night in different schools or night spots? Do you have a portfolio online and on hand? Does your demo and business cards have specific spots in every single pair of pants you have?

Words: Streetz “The Living Legend”

…So the other day I was flippin the channel and I came across the BET “We Gotta Do Better Awards(also known as the Hip hop awards). It was once again (minus the freestyle) another ghetto whack affair that makes the hip hop culture and our race look WEAK! Now that I got that out, last week was crazy as T.I became the latest black celebrity to get bagged. This time for buying machine guns… not 45’s, not 9mm’s, MACHINE GUNS!! Now that he had priors, he could face 20-30 years in jail or more. These series of events over the last few weeks leads me to one conclusion: We as a race cannot leave the ‘hood’ elements behind, no matter what type of status we obtained.

Disagree? What about Michael Vick? His career was all but set in stone, he was the toast of ATL, had endorsements for YEARS, and threw it all away to fight dogs in his crib… OJ, who got away with murder once, fcuks around and runs up on cats with his memorabilia that he didn’t own anymore…all to that _______<++insert any rappers name here, who constantly gets bagged for having marijuana on them, in their car, a random pistol, etc etc etc. What’s REALLY good?

I wonder if it is just publicity stunts at first, to keep up a certain “street cred” image with the public to sell what some of these rappers say in their lyrics, then I hear quite possibly the MOST gangsta rapper out (Styles P) say he NEVER wants to go back to jail. If he’s saying it, then I know it truly isn’t “cool to be locked up”. Some cats, like Akon, made a career over incarceration, but is it REALLY worth it? I bet if you ask him jail is the last thing he wants to see. Is it even the fact that a lot of these dudes got famous early and never broke out of their bad habits? Maybe they think they will never get caught? I don’t care what you say, for a dude like T.I.P., who has a movie coming out with Denzel, Records going platinum, and nothing but opportunity ahead, to risk throwing all of that away just to stack an arsenal that would make them Columbine kids blush, is STUPID period.

I’ve never claimed to be a gangsta or had a crazy rough life, however I still remember the drug dealers and such telling us to stay in school, because their life isn’t for us. I still remember them same cats talking about “making it” and giving that life up. Some weren’t fortunate to see the next day. Others grew out of that life and were able to get a legal hustle poppin. So if you are so hood, and you got OUT, why do the things that you know will put you back to square one? Why throw away the result of the grind to lean on the EXCUSE of being a product of your environment? The same dudes who call you a G and say you are Keeping It Real are the SAME dudes who will have taken your place while you sit in jail, wondering What if?

Whether they like it or not, these men are role models to our youth. To the kids without dads. To the kids with a full family. To the neighborhood hustler and the around the way dozier. We all root for you when you come out our hoods and make it. Some of us will hate on you openly, but still respect you for giving us hope of a brighter future. I won’t make the same asinine argument some people say that blames “Hip Hop Culture” for this decline in behavior amongst blacks. There have been art forms and artists who have gone against the grain for centuries. They inspire creativity and invoke a feeling of encouragement in youth. Nothing wrong with that. However it does start with family. It continues with education. It ends with common sense. T.I. Hold your head, and straighten it out once you are freed. Remember who you represent and remember the bigger picture. We all need to be our brothers’ keeper. Our sisters’ keeper. We got to do better yall.

Let’s Praise Our HBCU Celebrity Graduates: Jesus of the Playground

Let’s Remember Our HBCU Grads: Earl Monroe

“Jesus of the Playground”

Vernon Earl Monroe (born on November 21, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American former professional basketball player known for his flamboyant dribbling, passing and play-making. His nicknames included both "Earl the Pearl" and his Philadelphia nickname, "Black Jesus".

From early age, Monroe was a playground legend. His high school teammates at John Bartram High School called him "Thomas Edison" because of the many moves he invented.

Monroe rose to prominence at the Division II level playing basketball at Winston-Salem State University, located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Under the coaching of Hall of Fame coach Clarence "Big House" Gaines, Monroe averaged 7.1 points his freshman year, 23.2 points as a sophomore, 29.8 points as a junior and 41.5 points his senior year. In 1967, he earned NCAA College Division Player of the Year honors and led the Rams to the NCAA College Division Championship.

Earl is a member of the Groove Phi Groove, SFI.

In 1967, the two-time All-American was drafted by the Baltimore Bullets (now the Washington Wizards) in the first round of the NBA draft (2nd overall pick). He won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in a season in which he averaged 24.3 points per game, and scored 56 points in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

In 1971, Monroe was traded to the New York Knicks and formed a celebrity backcourt with equally flamboyant Walt Frazier. The duo meshed together to form one of the most deadly guard combinations of all time, featuring two Hall of Famers and NBA 50th Anniversary Team members. With Monroe, the Knicks won the 1973 NBA championship.

“You know, my favorite player of all time was Earl Monroe. He was the truth, son! The way he used to come down, spin move, dish… I’m not talking about when he was with Bullets. The Knicks, they put shackles on him. I’m talking about in North Philadelphia. They called him Jesus. Then the white media got a hold of him and they started calling him Black Jesus. But that’s the real reason you got your name, son. Not Jesus in the Bible, Jesus of the Playgrounds…”

Shotgun Killer at ST.JOHN"S!!??!?

Student Terrorizes St. John’s in a Halloween Mask

Words Tewauna Oliver

Its 2:45 and I’m late for class. I begin making the long journey from my car to class on the first floor of Marillac Hall. I walk in, say hello and begin to get caught up on what I missed when all of a sudden one of the girls in my class says, “I just got a text message from public safety.”

She begins to read out loud:

"From public safety: Male was found on campus with a rifle. Please stay in your buildings until further notice. He is in custody, but please wait until the all-clear.”

Students began frantically looking around for their own phones in attempts to see whether or not public safety had notified them as well. Soon a barrage of “I got the text too”, and “Oh I have a voicemail” came from the students towards the professor who was just as confused as the students

Just then more text messages spilled in this time from friends and family members expressing concern and even wild rumors of three and four gunman. After a while, the not so subtle whooping sound of a helicopter flying over head could be heard. The entire journalism class rushed to the windows to see just what else they might be able to catch a glimpse of. To their surprise they had only a fairly decent seat to see the “action.” From the window of the class room on the first floor of Marillac it was possible to see SWAT cars, and even members of the NYPD SWAT team fully uniformed. Being a class full of journalists the students disbursed into groups some taking photos and others doing research online seeing which news sites had already updated their pages.

Soon messages of plain clothed FBI agents walking through the building came in. Looking through the window, the slight action occurring was loosing its buzz in a class room of restless students happy to be ok but rather upset about the “inconvenience.”

As students are herded in the building from the streets they find their way into the nearby class rooms causing an outbreak of discussion on the possibility of the suspect blending in. As the fear and tension rises, more loud commotion can be heard coming from outside.

“The class room across the hall, look they barricaded the door!”

A student pointed out after catching a glimpse of classroom furniture through the small window in the classroom door.

There was a lot of movement going on outside leading a student to peek their head out to see what was happening, they were told that “every one needs to leave the building and go to Carnaseca Arena.” The class hesitantly gathered their things and proceeded out the door, down the hall, and down the stairs through a side door close by the arena. SWAT team members stood guard near the entrance doors making sure everything was clear for students to pass. After about two hours in the arena we were finally released and told that the rumors of multiple gun men were false and that one gunman was in custody.

Over the next few days news had spread like wildfire about the actual events of the day. Omesh Hiraman a 22 year old transfer freshman at St. John’s University entered Marillac Hall with a loaded riffle, wearing a hoodie, and a Halloween mask. While strolling in the halls, Hiraman was tackled by campus police and a police cadet.

An arraignment was held September 28th via video between Judge Deborah Stevens Modica and Hiraman from is hospital bed at Belleview in Manhattan. Hiraman is looking to face up to one year in prison if convicted.

Next in Line: OJ Mayo

Next in Line: OJ Mayo

Words Tewauna Shante

LA Times: Along the way, he has developed a cure for homesickness.

"I've got a basketball and a 10-foot goal," Mayo said. "I've known that family since I was 10 years old."

It seems the 19-year-old is off to a successful start in his attempt to distance himself from a turbulent senior year of high school in which he was suspended for three games after making contact with a referee and cited for misdemeanor marijuana possession, a charge that was later dismissed.

"I had some incidents last season, and that really wasn't me. Maybe some things got blown out of proportion a little bit, but you've got to deal with it. I just wanted to come out here and show people that I'm a student-athlete, and I just want an opportunity to take care of my family one day."

The 6-foot-5, 200-pound guard has also displayed his considerable skills in pickup games throughout the Southland against an impressive array of NBA players, including Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Jason Kidd, Mike Dunleavy Jr., Sam Cassell and J.J. Redick.

"It was just going and getting beat up on a little bit," Mayo said, "just to learn the bumps and bruises and get better as a player."

"I tried my best," he said, flashing a wide smile. "A lot of people said they liked what they saw and said just continue working hard with the opportunity to be a special player in the league. That's just my dream, to be a dominant player in the league and hopefully lead a team to the NBA title.

"Right now I'm just focusing on USC basketball and our team, making sure we're getting better as a team and trying to make a run for the Pac-10 title and the national title.”

McDonald's All-American who averaged 28.2 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds while leading Huntington (W.Va.) High to a state title as a senior.

WSAZ.com: Mayo was selected by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association as the 2007 recipient of Bill Evans Award for the state's Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year.

Before starting at Huntington this past season, Mayo played in Ohio where he was a two-time Ohio Mr. Basketball.

Mayo led the state in scoring this season at 28.4 points per game.

Huntington put an exclamation on one of the finest seasons in state history with a 103-to-61 win over South Charleston for the Class Triple-A championship tonight at the Charleston Civic Center.

For the top-seeded Highlanders, O-J Mayo had 41 points, ten rebounds and eleven assists as the Highlanders earned an unprecedented third straight Triple-A title.

USC Trojans sports page usctrojans.cstv.com: Dwight Lewis was battling a sinus infection and did not make the trip. Also, Daniel Hackett was given the trip off to rest up and get back into the swing of things as he spent the entire summer playing basketball for the Italian national team and just flew back in time for the USC practice sessions. With neither of the returning part-time starting guards from last season making the trip, coach Floyd will get a chance to get a longer look at some of the new guards such as O.J. Mayo and Marcus Simmons, as well as 2006-07 members Ryan Wetherell, Kyle Austin and Terence Green.

No casualties at dinner and onto the bus they went for the alleged two-hour ride. Nearly three hours later we arrived at Culiacan for the game at the Universidad de Sinoloa Gymnasium...10 minutes before game time. The players went to the locker room, warmed up for 15 minutes and the game began a few minutes late.

The first scheduled game was against a semi-pro team called the Caballeros de Culiacan, which had four American players. The Caballeros shot the lights out in the first half and Tim Floyd's young squad went to the locker room trailing 59-52. The game used FIBA rules which meant a 24-second shot clock and four 10-minute quarters.

After a short reprimand about desire on the defensive end, the Trojans came out and took control, outscoring Culiacan 50-23 in the second half and cruised to a 102-82 victory. Leading the way for USC were freshmen Davon Jefferson and O.J. Mayo, who both scored 29 points. Eleven of the 12 Trojans who played scored at least one point.

The college team from Sinaloa did not show up for the second game, but the Caballeros said they would play the Trojans twice. After a tough game that didn't conclude until after 10 p.m., they thought better of it and the teams called it a night. Two other memorable moments from the night in Culiacan were spotting a huge tarantula near the locker room and strength coach Rudy Hackett witnessing a soap bar-sized cockroach come up through the sink as he washed his hands! Ah, the joys of travel!

USC's next hurdle was waiting an hour for the post game pizzas to arrive before the long ride back to El Cid. The ride was a little faster going back, but not without one more surprise. All of the sudden the bus driver pulled over and ran to a "quickie mart" to get a cup of coffee, startling all the sleepy travelers.

Top Ten College Football Games to Watch: Week 5

Top 10 College Football Games - Week 5

Brett Huston

www.FanNation.com

10. Mississippi State (+13.5) at No. 21 South Carolina

Saturday, 12:30 p.m. EST, Lincoln Financial Sports

If you're a fan of offensive football, hide the women and children. This won't be pretty. The Bulldogs have the worst offense in the SEC and South Carolina's ranks ninth in the conference. Both teams rank in the top-third in the country in total defense, and these teams have actually played somebodies, rather than the out-of-conference garbage most teams have faced at this point in the season. South Carolina is coming off a tough loss in Baton Rouge, where they actually struck first against LSU only to face a Tiger onslaught from there on out. In their two conference games thus far, the Gamecocks have scored 16 points both times, so for them to be favored by nearly two touchdowns, even at home against a bottom-tier SEC club, is a bit mysterious. Sure, Spurrier's boys will probably get their offense revved up at some point this season, but don't count on it being this week. Redshirt freshman QB Chris Smelley is relieving senior Blake Mitchell as the starter against the Bulldogs, and though he's played earlier this season, it's hard to imagine he'll inject enough life in the offense for them to go on an offensive rampage this quick.

Neither Sylvester Croom nor Mississippi State fans seem to have an idea who the team's quarterback is. Michael Henig, the starter at the beginning of the season, got hurt two weeks ago at Auburn, and that may be a blessing in disguise. Henig's performance against LSU in the opener was one of the worst performances you'll ever see in a Division I college football game (granted, the opponent may have had just a bit to do with that). Josh Riddell and Wesley Carroll haven't exactly lit it up either, but if they can hand the ball off and avoid turnovers, they'll be a step above Henig. One aspect not to be overlooked in this one is the absence of South Carolina linebacker Jasper Brinkley, who is out for the year after spraining his right knee last week. Anthony Dixon should have much more room to run without the Gamecocks' defensive star.

The pick: South Carolina 22, Mississippi State 16

9. UCLA (+2) at Oregon State

Saturday, 6:30 p.m. EST, Fox Sports Net

Who would have thought Utah would play such a prominent role in analyzing a match-up between two Pac-10 opponents? The Beavers shut down the Utes 24-7 in the first week of the season, and two weeks ago, Utah smoked a ranked UCLA team 44-6. By that math, Oregon State should win this one by 55. Umm, yeah. This one should be tight throughout, which would be a bit of a change from the Beavers' games early on, in which they've either blown out their opponent or been blown out. They managed to not only blow a 19-0 first quarter lead last weekend at Arizona State, but the Sun Devils scored 44 of the next 51 points, taking a 44-26 lead before Oregon State scored a late TD to make the score somewhat close. That being said, the Sun Devils have been on fire early on, and there's no shame in losing in Tempe.

Now it's back to Corvallis, where the Beavers have looked strong in their two home games. Sean Canfield was dreadful last week, throwing five interceptions on the road, overshadowing a strong performance from running back Yvenson Bernard and Canfield's receivers. The Beavers need to ride Bernard as much as possible while taking some shots downfield with Sammie Stroughter, but the running game should be priority number one. UCLA has a strange situation under center - Ben Olson sat out last week's game against Washington as backup Pat Cowan and the Bruins put up 44 points; now it's Cowan who's hurt and the shaky Olson is back under center. Like Oregon State, UCLA's best recipe for success should be on the ground, with the tandem of Kahlil Bell and Chris Markey. For the Bruins' sake, they better win this one, or the temperature of Karl Dorrell's already hot seat will rise again.

The pick: Oregon State 37, UCLA 34

8. No. 1 USC (-20.5) at Washington

Saturday, 8 p.m. EST, ABC

It's somewhat strange that USC signing an exclusive rights TV deal with ABC hasn't made headlines the way Notre Dame's deal with NBC did. What's that? There is no such deal? Must just seem that way. The traveling Trojan circus hits Seattle this week, its third straight primetime performance on Mickey Mouse's network, to face a Washington team that's shown glimpses of brilliance while experiencing some major growing pains. USC hasn't been tested so far during its first three games, but No. 1 is getting tested in the polls. Coming into the season, few doubted the Trojans holding the top spot. But after the way LSU and Oklahoma have looked, USC faces the challenge of not just having to win, but win impressively each week, in order to stay on top. They've done nothing to disappoint thus far, even going into Lincoln and destroying Nebraska for their signature win to this point in the season. But considering the ‘Huskers gave up 600 yards of offense last week and nearly lost to Ball State, is that win really any good?

Washington, whether the strength of schedule computers agree or not, has the nation's toughest schedule. They've already played ranked teams in Ohio State and Boise State, along with what was once an 11th-ranked UCLA team and a Syracuse team that dismantled Louisville last week. After USC comes back-to-back games with Arizona State and at Oregon. Later in the year, Cal rolls into town and the Huskies fly to Hawaii to face a likely undefeated team in their season finale. The point here is that Washington won't be intimidated by USC. Unfortunately for UW, the Trojans won't be intimidated by the raucous Husky Stadium crowd. Jake Locker can do magical things, and eventually might win a Heisman for Washington, but going up against USC's outstanding defense is a large task for any freshman. On the other side of the ball, the Huskies rank last in the Pac-10 in rushing defense, and USC's offensive line has probably been salivating since early Sunday about pushing around that defensive front. Look for some huge holes for whomever USC decides to hand the ball to and John David Booty will be able to continue his Heisman campaign once the running game gets started.

The pick: USC 43, Washington 20

7. Auburn (+18) at No. 4 Florida

Saturday, 8 p.m. EST, ESPN

Going into The Swamp at night is not an enviable task, particularly if these things are also working against you: 1) you were the only team to knock off the Gators a year ago, depriving them of an undefeated season due to a questionable officiating decision, thus making this a "revenge" game; 2) your quarterback has a 1-to-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio; and 3) you were one drive away from being 0-3 at home to start the season. Throw in having to deal with the rising legend that is Tim Tebow and it could be a long night in Gainesville for the Tigers.

Auburn's defense should be able to keep the team in this game, but for how long is the question. Florida's offense is averaging 50 points per contest. The possibility of Florida looking ahead to next week's showdown in Baton Rouge is certainly out there, but given the Gators' shaky performance at Ole Miss last week and the circumstances surrounding their loss last year at Auburn, it's hard to believe Urban Meyer won't have his team ready to play. Percy Harvin is nursing a hip injury and Andre Caldwell is hurt as well, but Tebow has enough weapons that he should be just fine. It's hard to say the same for Auburn, with Brandon Cox struggling mightily through his first three games as a senior starter before getting a little bit of mojo back last week against New Mexico State. He'll need to play the game of his life if Auburn is to stand a chance, and Tommy Tuberville would be wise to let him try. Florida's defense is tough but can be attacked through the air. Whether Cox will be able to hear any plays coming into his helmet is another story.

The pick: Florida 38, Auburn 17

6. Kansas State (+14.5) at No. 7 Texas

Saturday, 3:30 p.m. EST, ABC

This is the sneaky, under-the-radar game of the week, an honor that would have gone to Penn State-Illinois had the Nittany Lions gone into Champaign undefeated. But let's consider the circumstances here. Texas got fat last week beating up its in-state friend Rice, and all of a sudden a shaky Longhorns' offense is good to go heading into next week's titanic clash against Oklahoma in Dallas. For quite a few years this decade, it's been Texas that's been the higher-ranked team going into the Red River Shootout, only to get stomped by the Sooners, and Texas would love nothing more than to turn the tables on their bitter rivals.

But Kansas State's on the schedule? No one in Texas save for Mack Brown is thinking about the Wildcats, but they should be. Kansas State came within a whisker of beating Auburn in the season opener (back when that would have been considered a really big deal) and have had two weeks to prepare for their trip to Austin. And it's hard to imagine the ‘Cats will be looking ahead to their game next week against rival Kansas (no disrespect intended, Jayhawk fans). Kansas State isn't flashy, but they've got the horses on defense to frustrate Colt McCoy and Jamaal Charles. That leaves it up to Josh Freeman, whose completion percentage has been excellent through three games. Jordy Nelson has been the team's big play threat, but Freeman will have to be watch out for an outstanding Texas secondary when looking for his favorite receiver. This is the very definition of a trap game, but being at home should be enough to make the difference for the ‘Horns.

The pick: Texas 28, Kansas State 21

5. No. 19 Penn State (-3) at Illinois

Saturday, Noon EST, Big Ten Network

After getting its annual Michigan meltdown out of the way in September, Penn State can now get on with the first week of the rest of its life. The blueprint to beat the Wolverines was out there and the Nittany Lions chose to shred those plans and pound the football between the tackles, never a good idea when you're lacking a competent tailback and decent run blocking. But here's the thing: what Armanti Edwards and Dennis Dixon did isn't just a blueprint to beat Michigan; it's a game-plan that, if executed well, can beat pretty much any defense in the Big Ten, Penn State's included.

Juice Williams hasn't quite exploded yet in his sophomore season like some were inclined to believe, but he hasn't had to. Rashard Mendenhall would be the talk of the Big Ten at tailback if it wasn't for Mike Hart. The junior is on pace for more than 1,600 yards on the ground. Freshman wideout Arrelious Benn is getting more adjusted to big-time college football each week. Basically, this Illini team is ready to break out against a quality opponent at any time, and with Penn State and Wisconsin coming to Champaign consecutively, odds are it's coming soon. For those of you inclined to gamble, though, bet on it happening next week against a questionable Badgers' defense. Penn State is better than it showed a week ago against Michigan, and will move the ball on the Illini. Look for the defense to sit back and force Williams to beat them through the air, something the young QB may not be able to do - at least for one more week.

The pick: Penn State 24, Illinois 13

4. No. 24 Alabama (+2.5) at Florida State in Jacksonville

Saturday, 5 p.m. EST, CBS

Despite hailing from Alabama, Bobby Bowden has never played his home-state squad, and his first meeting with the Tide will come at a somewhat neutral site in Jacksonville. This one is a big deal for Bowden, who was ready to take the head coaching job at Alabama in 1986, but the offer from Tuscaloosa never came. So he built Florida State into a perennial national title contender over the next 15 years, and now, after the program has been down recently, he'd love one more shot at glory before he retires. Off the field, the program is undergoing some major investigations into alleged cheating in the classroom involving 13 players and some faculty members.

Frankly, we're not sure if Florida State is any good three games into the season. They looked absolutely awful in the first half at Clemson, made somewhat of a game of things in the second half, struggled to beat a bad UAB team in Tallahassee, and then did virtually nothing offensively at Colorado in a 16-6 win. Drew Weatherford's stats aren't bad, but he's always one throw away from going into a virtual hibernation, and it must say something about the team's confidence in backup Xavier Lee that he hasn't been given more of a chance to play. Alabama has played some thrillers in the past two weeks, and last week's comeback against Georgia fell just short in overtime. John Parker Wilson has been excellent, and freshman Terry Grant has been a breath of fresh air on the ground. Florida State's defense will have to keep this one close, but it'll be their offense that will have to make a play if they're to win.

The pick: Alabama 26, Florida State 17

3. No. 23 Michigan State (+7.5) at No. 9 Wisconsin

Saturday, 3:30 p.m. EST, ABC

It seems like a loss in this game could set one of these programs in a free-fall, with Michigan State destined for its annual October swoon and Wisconsin seemingly living on borrowed time despite its lofty ranking. But John L. Smith is long gone, and with the Spartans run-pass balance, maybe this is the year they surprise people and don't fold before Halloween. Javon Ringer and Jehuu Caulcrick have taken the pressure off first-year starter Brian Hoyer, but Hoyer has been able to make some plays of his own, albeit against some suspect competition to this point. Still, with the tailback tandem having rushed for at least 300 yards apiece, the Spartans will go as far as their ground game takes them. But Wisconsin has to be conscious of wide receiver Devin Thomas, who is capable of hurting the Badgers deep.

Wisconsin started off with a fairly comfortable victory against a decent Washington State team and has since looked shaky (UNLV), defenseless (The Citadel) and offenseless (Iowa). Not exactly a way to inspire confidence for a team ranked in the preseason Top 10. Yet through it all, the Badgers have found a way to win as they settle into the Big 10 slate. And even though last week's victory over Iowa wasn't pretty, that's Wisconsin football. P.J. Hill has been strong as expected, but quarterback Tyler Donovan has shown an ability to make something out of nothing, something previous Badger signal-callers struggled to do. Donovan's brilliant 29-yard scramble for a touchdown out in Vegas saved Wisconsin from a potential overtime duel with the Rebels, and he's thrown seven TDs to just one interception so far. It's the defensive side where the Badgers need to shore things up, something that'll be far easier if star cornerback Jack Ikegwuonu is healthy.

The pick: Wisconsin 24, Michigan State 17

2. No. 5 West Virginia (-6.5) at No. 18 South Florida

Friday, 8 p.m. EST, ESPN2

This would be the landmark win that Jim Leavitt and his USF Bulls are looking for. Having not existed as a football program 10 years ago, Leavitt has done an amazing job building USF from the ground up, and his team has won some big games along the way, including a demolition of Louisville two years ago and a 24-19 win at West Virginia one year ago. But those were still under-the-radar USF teams. Now, people are getting a sense how good this program could be. No, they won't be the favorites Friday night at Raymond James Stadium, but West Virginia will be fully aware what kind of team it's facing.

Stop Pat White and Steve Slaton and you'll stop the Mountaineers. Stop Tom Brady, Laurence Maroney, Randy Moss and you'll stop the Patriots. The point is even though you may know what's coming and when it's coming, that doesn't mean you can stop it. Whereas you know Brady and the Patriots will come out five wide, looking to spread the field and throw the ball all day, you know White and Slaton are going to come out and try to beat you by getting their exceptional speed outside. South Florida has by far the toughest defense the Mountaineers have seen to this point, and they bottled up the terrific tandem a year ago, so odds are they won't let West Virginia get close to the 525-yard average the blue and gold have racked up on offense. On the flip side, Bulls quarterback Matt Grothe is a star in the making, having engineered USF's stunning overtime win at Auburn and throwing four touchdowns without a pick this year. But he'll need to get freshman tailback Mike Ford a heavy dose of carries against a West Virginia defense that, despite supposedly being the team's Achilles' heal, has been a strong suit four games into the season.

The pick: South Florida 30, West Virginia 27

1. No. 6 California (+6) at No. 12 Oregon

Saturday, 3:30 p.m. EST, ABC

I think ABC has enough 3:30 games tomorrow. There are no less than five games being broadcast over-the-air by the "ESPN on ABC" crew in that time frame, at least three of which should be excellent games, depriving much of the nation of seeing those games. Only 20 percent of the country will get this one, all on the west coast, which is a shame for the best game of the week, the unofficial "Who Will Be USC's Greatest Challenge" Bowl. If there were no preseason rankings, the Ducks would be ahead of the Bears. Sure, Cal knocked off a mediocre Tennessee team at home, but Oregon dismantled Michigan in the Big House and a decent Fresno State team in Eugene. Then last week, after inexplicably falling behind Stanford 31-21, the Ducks reeled off the game's final 34 points to win 55-31. Yeah, Dennis Dixon and his boys have a little bit of firepower.

That's not to say Cal is lacking offensively. Nate Longshore has been good, but Justin Forsett has stood out in the backfield since being called upon to replace Marshawn Lynch. And DeSean Jackson has been exciting to watch as usual, but he's only averaging 8.9 yards per catch and has yet to catch a touchdown pass. They need more out of their big playmaker in Eugene, because as outstanding as he is on punt returns, much like Devin Hester with the Bears, you can't count on those every week. A good, smart team will punt away from Jackson. There will be no shortage of touchdowns in this one, and the difference will likely come down to how Jonathan Stewart does on the ground for Oregon. Cal's defense is strong against the run, and if they can limit Stewart and put the game on Dixon's arm, they'll have a shot. But then again, Dixon has 11 touchdown passes so far this year, so for the kid whose ability to make plays through the air has annually been questioned, that may not work either.

The pick: Oregon 38, Cal 34

Bonus locks of the week:

Buffalo (+16) over Ball State

Louisville (-9) over N.C. State

Virginia (-7) over Pittsburgh
